Volunteer Opportunities

There are several groups in our area that are in need of volunteers. If you have some time to give, check these out!

Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders  

Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders (BCYL) is recruiting In-school volunteer tutors for students Kindergarten to 8th Grade. The focus is Reading and Math. Volunteers are needed for 1.5 to 2 hours each week, to support students with their classwork during school hours. Tutoring may be individual or in small groups of 2 or 3 students. Volunteers are needed for all Bridgeport elementary schools. Spanish speakers are needed. The tutor and teacher will coordinate a schedule convenient for both. Caroline House

Caroline House is a non-denominational organization provides education and guidance for women and children. Programs provide instruction in English as a second language, computer skills and life skills such child rearing, nutrition and economics of daily life. Tutoring is also provided for children. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Development Office at 334-0640.

Fairfield Museum

The Fairfield Museum and History Center is recruiting docents for its museum programs.  Docents will have the unique opportunity to participate in programs and training for this exhibit of original objects, individual stories, and engaging activities that explores how people worked, lived and built a community over time. For more information contact Christine Jewell Fairfield Museum and History Center 370 Beach Road Fairfield, CT 06824 203-259-1598 www.fairfieldhistory.org

 

Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center, a non-profit rehabilitation providing services to persons with disabilities, has volunteer opportunities tailored to fit one’s schedule. Assignments are offered on a short or long-term basis days, evenings or weekends. Opportunities include:

  1. Coaching a child with special needs

  2. Participating in community programs for adults with disabilities

  3. Assisting adults with disabilities in residential

  4. Helping with event projects

  5. Sharing a special skill or talent

Mercy Learning Center

The Center provides literacy training for women who need basic education in reading, ESL and math . Volunteers are needed to work in the basic program as one-on-one or small group tutors or in enrichment activities in a classroom setting providing information about budgeting, cooking, health, nutrition, job readiness and more.  For information contact the Center at 203-334-6699 or visit www.mercylearningcenter.org

Stratford Historical Society 

If you enjoy working with children, would like to teach them about local history, and have a few hours to share, you are invited to join the Stratford Historical Society’s Docent team. Six training sessions, 9:00 – 11:00 am, will take place in February and March – one session weekly. For additional information please contact the Society at 203-378-0630 or www.stratfordhistoricalsociety.org
